Chardon Board of Education Regular Meeting – October 13, 2025
Meeting Details: The meeting was held at 5:30 pm at the Chardon Board of Education building adjacent to Chardon Middle School at 428 North Street, Chardon. 0:23 Min ROLL CALL AND WELCOME - Meeting was called to order. It was stated that this meeting is being held in accordance with Section 3313.16 of the Ohio Revised Code.
Attendance: Board President Karen Blankenship, James Midyette and C.J. Paterniti. Vice President Andrea Clark arrived late to the meeting at some point after the approval of the Consent Agenda.
Absent: Todd Albright.
Staff Attendance: Superintendent Dr. Michael Hanlon, Treasurer Deb Armbruster, Assistant Treasurer Crystal King-Morrison, and Assistant Superintendent Dr. Ed Klein.

The Board Presiding Officer and student leaders, 5th grade Chardon Middle School student Landon Hruska and 8th grade Chardon High School student Carter Hruska, led the meeting in the Pledge of Allegiance.

3:50 Min Board Recognition - The Buckeye Association of School Administrators (BASA) Executive Director, Dr. David Axner, presented the 2025 Buckeye Association of School Administrators Exemplary Leadership Award to Superintendent of Schools, Michael P. Hanlon, Jr., Ph.D. The Exemplary Leadership Award is selected annually by a panel of peers from each of Ohio's BASA Service Regions.

One of the professional development programs on October 13, 2025 was a review of the district’s CSTAG, or Comprehensive School Threat Assessment Guidelines, for evaluating and responding to threats. District representatives to the CSTAG teams at each level participated in the training.

Shalyn Swick spoke about the Arthur Holden Leadership Institute (AHLI) program at the middle school.

Kristen Sironen, an intervention specialist at the Chardon Early Learning Center (CELC), spoke about the new curriculum and other learning activities at the preschool.

Emily Ringler spoke about her day-to day- responsibilities as a school psychologist at Park Elementary and Chardon Middle School.

Pursuant to Board of Education Policy 0166, the Superintendent made a recommendation to the Board of Education to approve the attached Proposal for a Phase l Environmental Site Assessment here, Chardon Schools Former Bus Parking Lot & Current Student Parking Lot, 151 Chardon Ave, Chardon, Geauga County, Ohio 44024. Dr. Hanlon advised that this is a “best practice” assessment before architectural and construction planning begins.

Chardon High School (CHS) just opened the Care Closet. The Care Closet, organized by staff members, provides essential hygiene items and school supplies to all students in need. See 7.2 under the Chief Financial Officers report for the donations.

The CHS Coffee Shop is open for business, providing coffee, snacks and specialty drinks for students and staff who need an early morning pick-me-up.

Chardon Early Learning Center students learned about community helpers.

Chardon Middle School earned the Edison Award for excellence in STEM education.

Two National Honor Society high school students refreshed the blacktop playground for Munson Elementary.

Pursuant to Board of Education Bylaw 0175.1, the Board of Education made a recommendation to approve the request of Board of Education President, Karen Blankenship, to attend the Annual Capital Conference of the Ohio School Boards Association including conference registration and related expenses. Date of the Conference: November 16-18, 2025.

2:24.40- Min New Business - Mrs. Blankenship advised that there were three candidates running for two open school board positions. She introduced the one candidate that was present at the meeting as Sharon Madger.
2:25.07 Min - Hearing of the Public on Non-Agenda Items - There were no speaker requests.
2:25.15 Min - A motion was made and approved for the Board of Education of the Chardon Local School District adjourn to Executive Session at 7:55 p.m. for the purpose(s) of:
(1) The appointment, employment, dismissal, discipline, promotion, demotion, or compensation of an employee or official, or the investigation of charges or complaints against an employee, official, licensee or regulated individual, unless the employee official, licensee, or regulated individual requests a public hearing.

Mrs. Blankenship advised that no action would be taken after the executive session and the video ended at 2:26.07 Min.
