LWV Geauga Finalizes Forum Lineup

99th and 11th Districts are on the agenda for October 6

Geauga County, OH - With the September 20 participation deadline now past tense, the League of Women Voters of Geauga (LWVG) is officially announcing its slate of participants for their Candidate Forum on October 6, 2022, at 7 p.m. at Westwood Elementary School at 13738 Cedar Road in Novelty. Please note this recent change in location.

Certified candidates for these contested races will attend:

  • 11th District Court of Appeals, Judge

    • Thomas R. Wright (D)

    • Eugene A. Lucci (R)

  • 99th District Ohio Representative

    • Kathy Zappitello (D)

    • Sarah Fowler Arthur (R)

The State of Ohio League of Women Voters  “Empty Chair” Policy prohibits local Leagues from allowing participation by candidates in state or regional races when only one candidate in the race agrees to take part. Thus, the races for 14th Congressional Representative (Matt Kilboy-D accepted; David P. Joyce- R declined), 35th District State Representative (Lori O’Neill - D accepted; Steve Demetriou - R declined), and 9th District Board of Education (Non-Partisan: John P. Hagan - accepted; Robert R. Fulton - declined) will not be included in the Candidate Forum. It is not the League’s role to explain a candidate’s non-participation. Such communications should come directly from the candidates.

“The Candidate Forum is our League’s premier event,” said Robert Lee, Vice President of LWVG. “Getting Candidates in a public forum and talking about their platform and their background are consistent with the goals of the LWV.  We appreciate the willingness of the candidates to participate in this event.  Looking forward to another informative meeting for voters.”

Each candidate will engage in a 3-minute opening statement, followed by a question and answer session run by a board member from the LWVG. Campaign materials will be available to the public immediately following the event.

Public questions determine the topics for the evening! Everyone is encouraged to review LWVG’s Criteria for Good Questions, which is available on our website at www.lwvgeauga.org/candidateforum and then submit candidate questions via the online form. Community members will also be offered notecards at the event to submit questions in real time. A LWVG screening panel will review questions against established criteria and combine similar questions.

As for attendance, voters will have a choice between attending in person, watching in real-time from any remote location or viewing the recorded forum at a later date on the official LWVG YouTube channel.  Live streaming and recording will be provided by Geauga-TV. Additionally, the recording will be shared by other League chapters in the region, including those in Lake, Ashtabula, Trumbull, Northern Portage, Canton, Kent, Hudson and Akron.
