Chardon Board of Education

July 18, 2022

The meeting began at 6:30 pm at the Administrative Offices on 428 North Street Chardon OH.  A virtual option and video are available on the Chardon Board of Education website (see below).

The following Board members were in attendance:  Todd Albright, Karen Blankenship, C. J Paterniti, Keith Brewster and Dr. Guy Wilson.  Also present were Superintendent Michael Hanlon and Treasurer Deb Armbrewster.

The Pledge was recited and the Mission Statement.

Minutes from 6/20/22 Regular meeting and 6/27/22 Special Meeting were approved.

There was no public comment on the Agenda items.

Treasurer’s Report:

  • End of the fiscal year summary showed the school budget in good order with a surplus and savings over the last year;

  • Student athletes from the Chardon Track Team who competed at the state meet were acknowledged and honored; Roofing repairs are on track to be completed by the beginning of the school year;

  • An agreement to promote leadership development for 7th graders was approved as the program is run by a Chardon alum and was vetted by the Middle School PTO.  It is called the Unleashed Program.

  •  The Board approved a resolution related to providing more flexibility in hiring substitute teachers. Chardon has not had difficulty securing substitutes as yet but the State of Ohio passed House Bill 583 that makes changes regarding educator licenses and establishes a committee to explore the causes of statewide shortages of substitute teachers. Dr. Guy Wilson mentioned that while Chardon isn't facing a current shortage in teachers, this may become an issue in the future as regulations on the profession may render it a less attractive employment option than it has been in the past.
