Beyond Voter Registration

LWVG expands its efforts to public voter education programming amidst

the nonpartisan group’s surge in membership

You might be surprised to find out that the League of Women Voters of Geauga (LWVG) does more than just register voters in the county. And now that the local chapter recently surpassed its 100th active member in August–there were only 8 League members in 2020–LWVG is stepping out into the realm of community outreach and voter education.

LWVG is asking Geauga citizens to mark their calendars for Wednesday, September 18, 2024, for a one-hour moderated discussion with Director Michelle Lane and Deputy Director Nora McGinnis of the Geauga County Board of Elections (BOE). Entitled Proud of the Process, this brand-new program will provide clear and concise insight into how the Board of Elections runs fair and secure elections year after year.

Have you ever wondered how voting equipment and ballots are stored and accessed? What about voting machines; are they connected to the Internet? How can Ohio’s current system ensure that every eligible voter is only able to cast one vote? When are mail-in ballots actually tabulated?
Questions posed to BOE officials will focus on the election process from voter registration to the various methods of voting to the ballot counting procedures and the post-election audit.

“What we are really trying to do here is address some of the most common voting misconceptions, as well as empower Geauga citizens by providing accurate information that can be shared far and wide,” said Carol Benton, newly elected LWVG president. “
Come re-discover the ‘Process’ and take pride in the outstanding job our Board of Elections does.” The event is free and open to the public.

The spark for Proud of the Process came from LWVG’s Community Outreach Committee. The BOE recently presented at an LWVG membership meeting earlier this year. League volunteers found their messaging highly-informative and realized that the broader Geauga community could benefit from access to this same information. After much planning and organizing, Proud of the Process was born.
